Approaches, Routes and Navigation
From the south
After passing Walton on the Naze with its distinctive tower, the land drops away but a look at the chart will warn you of the extensive shallows to be avoided. The turning point is marked by the red and white Pye End Buoy at the northern end of the buoyed channel down into the Backwaters. Those with shoal draft vessels can cut across the Sunken Pye to No.2 and No.3 when water allows.
From the north
Craft coming down the coast will have to cross the Harwich Deep Water Channel carrying the container ships to the Port of Felixstowe. Crossing should be made between the green Rolling Ground buoy and Platters south cardinal. In bad visibility either steer clear or contact Harwich Harbour for advice.
Once across, a westerley heading will find the red and white Pye End Buoy at the northern end of the buoyed channel down into the Backwaters.
