General
Le Havre is a city in Normandy, northern France, on the English Channel, at the mouth of the River Seine.
Le Havre is currently the first port (by traffic) in France and the fifth in Europe. The number of commercial ships landing each year in Le Havre is about 7,000, involving 250 scheduled lines with more than 500 ports all over the world. This however, does not detract at all from the charm and history of the city, making it a wonderful sailing destination, with the picturesque ports of Honfleur and Deauville nearby.
Population of the city (commune) at the 1999 census was 190,905 inhabitants (186,700 inhabitants as of February 2004 estimates). Population of the whole metropolitan area (aire urbaine) at the 1999 census was 296,773 inhabitants.
It was the port-of-call for French ocean liners making the Transatlantic crossing. Le Havre is known as "La Porte Océane". It is the largest city in Normandy before Rouen. It is the second largest export port in France.
Le Havre has been classified as a World Heritage Site since July 2005. The city has one university and a strong sporting heritage, with “Le HAC”, the oldest professional association football club in France.

Marinas and Anchorages
Shelter is very good inside the marina. Access is 24HR. Visitors pontoon is marked with 'O' immediately to starboard on entry, or in the North Basin. If you are staying for a while, call the Harbour Master and ask for the Bassin Vauban.
This is a busy port and although not having the charm of Honfleur across the river, it is a useful stop, being a major yachting centre. The marina is well sheltered and accessible at any tide, both day and night.
The marina is to port, round the short breakwater and the vistors' berths are to starboard round the second breakwater.
It is best to anchor the other side of the visitors pontoon from the one facing the entrance. As the large vessels leave the swell is condiderable, so it's best to be the south side of the pontoon. Much less swell.
