Latest Information

General

Olib is an island in northern Dalmatia, located northwest of Zadar, southwest of Pag Island, southeast of Lošinj Island and just east of Silba. The area is 25.63 sq km; population 714. The highest peaks of the island are Kalac (72 m) and Poljine (34 m). Due to the predominant limestone composition, Olib has no surface water streams or sources. Pools are frequent in dolomite zones (Salbunjaca) and at the bottom of funnel-shaped holes (Smoracnja, Stivan). The eastern part of the island is under low thickets; in the western part, which is partly protected from the bora, the vegetation is more luxuriant (Mediterranean underbrush, holm oak community) and reaches the sea. The eastern coast of Olib, with the bays of Slatina and Slatinica, is not suitable for docking due to shallows. The island's only settlement is Olib, which lies along the cove bearing the same name.

Approaches

OLIB

44° 23'N; 14° 47'E) A village (pop. 714 in 1991) and small harbour in the cove on the W coast of the island of Olib. Landmarks: Sv Stosija chapel (St Anastasia) in the village; the chapel on the N coast of the cove; the red tower with a column and gallery (red light) on the head of the breakwater.

Care should be taken of the shallow S coast. By night steer by the light on the head of the breakwater, which indicates the berth that must be given to Kurjak rock (on the NW side). Approaching the cove from SE, leave the yellow light buoy with a black band (white light) marking the shoal off Tale point to starboard.
