General

Apologies, a poor satellite pic.

Engineers wouldn't get away with it today, but they cut a ravine through an historic castle to enlarge and improve the shelter of Dunbar harbour. Nevertheless surging can still affect the harbour when swell is N to NE. You will be knocked about at the visitor's berth just inside the entrance, beneath the castle. With HMs permission a better option will be the wall opposite the entrance, next to the lifting bridge but you will be on the bottom at LW. The town has all the shops, banks, pubs and restaurants you could wish for. You could crew change here as Dunbar is on the mainline railway.

Approaches

Arrive at a position half mile to the north of the entrance and identify the leading line (198T, lit) on the grassy slope W of the harbour. This takes you safely between Scart and Castlefoot Rocks. Hold your nerve and continue on this until around 1 cable from the rocks when the narrow ravine-like entrance opens at 132T.

Weather

If there is big swell N to NE this harbour is badly affected.

Anchorage

In slight or smooth conditions anchor south of the 132T entrance leading line.
